The Electoral Commissioner in charge of 2020 KNUST Non-Residential elections, Baswoa Bernard is expected to announce the results for the March 12 polls on Focus 94.3 FM at 5:15 PM.
Thousands of students in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technolgy have been trooping to various polling centers to elect the next SRC parliamentary representatives at various constituencies around the university.
Nine candidates were confirmed by the Electoral Commission to contest in this year’s Non-Re elections at the Campus constituency, Kentinkrono, Bomso, Kotei, and Ayeduase constituency.
The elections which began at 9 am Thursday morning recorded low attendance at some polling centers but generated some momentum in the afternoon at the Cassely Hayford Building and the College of Engineering Auditorium.
Speaking to Focus News, Baswoa Bernard was optimistic about a possible increment in voter turn out in this year’s election adding that the process has been smooth so far.
“The whole process has been smooth so far with no hitches whatsoever. We started at 9 AM except that the were few electorates in queues to vote in the morning but along the line, I saw students trooping in at the Cassely Hayford Building and the College of Engineering Auditorium in their numbers.
Ahead of the elections, some students say the poor state of security off-campus is their most pressing concern, which they want the next SRC Members of Parliament to focus attention and resources on addressing, in collaboration with the school authorities.
Speaking in an interview with Focus News, a cross-section of the students who reside outside the campus stated that they want the aspirants to advocate more on their behalf especially with security.
“We want the aspiring MPs to come up with clear blueprints on how to make the off-campus much safer, especially during the night, in order to earn our votes,” a second-year mathematics student told Focus News.
