The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations commenced today, 9th January 2021 in Yaounde, Cameroon.
The host nation Cameroon locked horns with West African side Burkina Faso in the opening fixture.
Two goals from Cameroon captain Vincent Aboubakar gave the host nation all 3 points in the opening game.
Burkina Faso attained dominance of the game early on, and Gustavo Sangaré scored the opening goal of the 2021 AFCON after connecting to a cross from Bertrand Traoré.
The lead was however short-lived, after Bertrand Traore committed an error, giving away a penalty to Cameroon on the 38th minute.
Cameroon captain Vincent Aboubakar stepped up to score the resulting penalty, restoring parity in the game.
5 minutes later, it was time for Issoufou Dayo to make an error which resulted in another penalty for Cameroon.
Again, Vincent Aboubakar dispatched the penalty and this time give Cameroon a 2-1 lead.
The result sees Cameroon go top of Group A.
Later tonight, the other game in Group A kicks off with Ethiopia against Cape Verde.
