The maiden edition of the Ghana Junior Olympics Open Championship is set to take place at Paa Joe Stadium in KNUST.
The Ghana Junior Olympics is a two-day event slated for the 17th and 18th December 2021. The competition will see athletes from all spheres of the nation battle in several athletic events at different age divisions.
The age divisions start from 10 years old right up to the seniors. The athletes will compete in events including the 60m dash, 100m dash, 200m dash, 4×100. For the first time also, the 4×100m mixed relay race will be competed in Ghana, where both males and females will run in the same relay race.
Elorm Amenakpor, who’s one of the organizers of the competition, said the idea behind this is to unearth and groom young athletes for the nation.”We want to catch them young. So that progressively, they grow among themselves, “he said.
Elorm further hinted at plans to invite other countries to partake in the Junior Olympics for future events.
“This is starting as a Junior Olympics in Ghana, but in the future it could be a regional event involving countries like Nigeria, Togo, etc..” he added.
Competing at the event will be Ghana’s 2020 Olympian, Benjamin Azamati. Benjamin Azamati is also Ghana’s record holder in the 100m dash.
The Junior Olympics Open Championship is organized by Legon Creative Athletics Club in collaboration with the KNUST Sports Directorate and Seed Afrique.
