Ten Miners Killed In A Mine Collapse In The Western Region
On Wednesday, November 24, 2021, ten illegal small-scale miners were killed after a mining pit fell on them in Wassa Esikuma in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region.
Four severely injured illegal miners were rescued from the collapsed pit on Thursday, November 25, 2021, with the assistance of NADMO officials, police, and other security agencies.
NADMO’s Western Regional Director, Abdul Ganiwu, expressed regret that the ten people who died, as well as the four people who were injured, were still engaged in the dreaded illegal mining despite government intervention.
According to Mr. Ganiwu, “14 people were working in the galamsey pit when the pit caved in. Nine out of the 14 people died instantly and five were rushed to the Tarkwa Government Hospital. Unfortunately on Thursday, another person died making 10, so four are still on admission at the Tarkwa Government Hospital.”
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a morgue in Tarkwa, and the injured are being treated at the Tarkwa Apinto Government Hospital.
