Michael Essien deletes post backing LGBT rights in Ghana after comments

The 38-year-old has been targeted by several followers after the unpopular support for the LGBT community in the West African nation.

The former AC Milan and Real Madrid has received a barrage of criticism and abuse following his public comment on the explosive sensitive matter.

Essien has been forced to backtrack, deleting the post that sought to offer unflinching support to the minority group.

The former Ghana international has been forced to run without a trace after deleting the post amid the torrential backlash.

Homosexuality is a forbidden topic in Ghana and country president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has categorically stated it will not be legalized in the country.

LGBTQ+ continues to be a raging topic on Ghanaian media platforms despite the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo being emphatic on his position that under no circumstance will same-sex relationships be legalized in the country.

The President who had come under pressure from religious institutions said that homosexuality will not be legalized under his watch.

“It will not be under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that same-sex marriage will be legalized in Ghana, it will never happen in my time as president,” he stressed.
