Guinea: Junta members barred from contesting in elections

Guinea’s junta has stated that its members  are barred from standing in the next national or local elections, according to guidelines it released on the transitional period earlier this week.

A junta spokesperson in an interview on the State media emphasised that  Doumbouya is to be president, with a government composed of a civilian prime minister and cabinet, none of whom may be candidates in the elections.

The transitional charter also indicated that that it will agree on the length of transition to elections with an 81-member Transitional National Council (TNC). The TNC must be at least 30% female, and will include a president and two vice-presidents, who are also not allowed to run for office in the upcoming elections, the spokesperson said.

A National Transitional Council will be the acting parliament, composed of 81 members, including political parties, trade unions, employers, youth and the defence and security forces.

The transitional framework will remain in place until a new constitution is established, although there has been no indication how long the transition will be.

The military junta overthrew Alpha Condé on 5 September, putting in place a government run by junta leader Lieutenant-Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, in addition to two vice-presidents.

Over the past two weeks the junta has held consultations with public figures and business leaders to map out a framework for a transitional government.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Sept. 5 coup, Mamady Doumbouya, shrugged off asset freezes and travel bans imposed by the ECOWAS regional bloc aimed at pressuring a swift transition to constitutional rule.
