UG: “SRC running on personal funds of executives since February” – Isaac Agyemang laments
The UG SRC president, Isaac Agyemang in an interview said the situation has been difficult for the officials of the SRC as it has become costly to run the SRC from their personal coffers.
President of the University of Ghana Student Representative Council, Isaac Agyemang has disclosed that executives have had to rely on other sources to finance the operations of the SRC.
The SRC has been left without a budget to see to the day-to-day running of its units as the General Assembly has not been able to pass a budget for the second semester for the 2019/2020 academic year.
The principal officers of the SRC every semester are expected to prepare an estimated budget for the semester for approval by the General Assembly.
However, the later hasn’t been able to peruse the budget for the semester at any of its meetings in the semester.
In a radio interview with Isaac Agyemang, he says the situation has been difficult for the officials of the SRC as it has become costly to run the SRC from their personal coffers.
“We’ve been pre-financing since February and it has cost us so much and I wouldn’t even want to put a monetary value to this and also these are issues I can’t just put to the general public,” he lamented.
Following the closure of the University over the breakout of the infectious coronavirus and the onward migration of all academic activities online, the woes of the SRC has deepened.
According to Isaac Agyemang, the SRC has been working to safeguard the interest of the student.
He says he has had to do this without a budget and money from the students’ coffers.
“I wouldn’t want to put some figure to it but we have used around ten thousand of cedis so far and it has been almost 13 weeks” – Isaac Agyemang said.
Optimistically Isaac Agyemang noted that he is in talks with the leadership and members of the General Assembly to convene an emergency meeting to resolve the issue.
“As it stands now, we need people for this meeting and I wouldn’t want to take a step forward and would have to take a step back. I’ve spoken to some of the leaders of the General Assembly and they are putting measures in place for us to call an emergency meeting soon,” he added
