The speaker of parliament for the 12th SRC parliament for the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, who is also a final year student of optometry has advised women to possibly avoid the use of cosmetics such as eyeliners, eyelash glues and extensions ‘as they can cause abrasions and infections’.
Experts have warned that Bacteria is a concern with lash extensions, especially with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), the most common type of bacteria to live on eyelashes, the waste produced by S. aureus is toxic to the eye and causes inflammation of the lid margins. Lash extensions also harbour extra bacteria, increasing the risk of lid infections like stye and eye infections like bacterial conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye.
In an interview with focus news as the world marked, World Sight Day 2021, yesterday 14th October 2021, under the theme ‘love your eyes,’ the former speaker provided some health tips individuals can practice for a healthy eyesight.
According to him, individuals should make sure to get their eyes checked with doctors at least once in a year. “Do not share eye-drops with anyone. Avoid rubbing your eyes. Avoid cosmetics such as eyeliners, eyelash glues and extensions as they can get into the eye and cause abrasions and infections. Do not use an eye-drop one month after it has been opened.” he said.
He added that, ‘ fruits and vegetables that are green and colourful’ such as Spinach, carrots, watermelons, and cucumber should be taken regularly as they contribute to great eye sight.
