
The Tanzanian parliament has confirmed the appointment of Finance Minister Philip Isdor Mpango as the country’s vice-president.
Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango (born July 14, 1957) is the current Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, and former Minister of Finance of Tanzania, in office since March 2015.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan nominated the minister to the position Today ahead of the approval vote.
Dr Mpango fills in the chair of vice-presidency that became vacant after President Samia became president following the death of President John Magufuli early this Month.
Philip Mpango is an economist who has held various senior positions, as well as a senior economist at the World Bank.
Before being appointed by Mr Magufuli as a finance minister, he served as an economic adviser to former President Jakaya Kikwete.
Mpango previously held positions as the acting commissioner general of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), the executive secretary in the President’s Office (Planning Commission), the deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Finance & Economic Affairs, the personal assistant to the president (economic affairs), the head of the President’s Economic Advisory Unit, and as senior economist for the World Bank.
