NUGS appeals to the NLC to withdraw suit filed against UTAG

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), is appealing to the National Labour Commission to withdraw a suit filed against the University  Teachers Association of Ghana over its nationwide strike.

The NLC is seeking an interlocutory injunction to compel the lecturers, who have been on strike for four weeks, to return to work after the NLC declared their strike illegal.

Students who are bearing the brunt of the impasse between their lecturers and the government are pleading with the parties involved to return to the negotiating table rather than going to court to resolve the matter.

NUGS in a statement expressed disappointment in the government and the teachers association for their inability to reach a consensus on the matter.

“The strike has left university students in a state of dilemma as to whether to continue to stay on campus or not. This is unfair to us since being in school comes with an extra cost to parents and guardians. UTAG and government must understand that parents make extra expenses to keep their wards in school, and it is unfair the expenses go waste.”

“Students now loiter around university campuses without resumption of academic work anywhere insight. The industrial deadlock between UTAG and the government is happening at a dreadful cost to university students,” the statement added.

“We are entreating both parties not to go into negotiations with a display of ego (powerplay) which may delay the desired outcome of consensus. This we believe will make matters worse if not curbed moving forward,” it urged.

To ensure peaceful engagements, the National Students Union has asked the National Labour Commission (NLC) to withdraw its lawsuit against the University Teachers Association (UTAG).

The union also entreated UTAG to immediately suspend the industrial action and return to negotiations for prospective students to commence the academic activity for this academic year.
