KNUST shortlists 2,962 students for ‘Support One Needy Student With One Laptop’ Project

Some 2,962 students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been shortlisted to undergo a diligent selection process in order to ascertain their eligibility to be given laptops under the Vice Chancellor’s ‘Support One Needy Student With One Laptop’ (SONSOL) project.

The list of pre-qualified applicants for the project was drawn from all six colleges within the main campus in Kumasi including students from the Obuasi campus.

The Vice-chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson speaking during this year’s virtual matriculation ceremony maintained that the SONSOL initiative is geared towards helping poor students who may be unable to acquire a laptop for online studies.

According to her, the university management is burnt on helping brilliant but needy students who are unable to afford a laptop for their studies.

“We the management of KNUST are not oblivious to the fact that some of you, however brilliant you may be do not have laptops to study. Due to some of these challenges of some of you students lacking electronic gadgets for e-learning, the university launched the ‘Support One Needy Student With One Laptop’ (SONSOL) project,” she said.

The Vice-chancellor noted that KNUST has worked with its supportive stakeholders to provide some timely KNUST students.

She noted that the project has so far received a tremendous push from stakeholders including cooperate-partners, industry, and philanthropists.

Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson further noted that the university has taken delivery of 450 laptops from stakeholders and partners to support the project.

“In all, a total of 450 laptops have been donated by the following organizations; Vodafone Ghana, donation 200 pieces, Stanbic Ghana, donating 100 pieces, ABSA donating 50, SIC donating 50, Jospong Group of Companies donating, Zoomlion also donating 50 pieces,” she indicated.
