Finance Ministry Refutes Claims Of Withdrawing The GHc 241,933,000 Allocated To E-levy

Ghana’s Finance Ministry has denied reports that the GH241,933,000 appropriations for Electronic Transactions Levy services in the Appropriations Bill had been retrieved.

This comes on the back of social media backlashes that the government had retrieved the money and discussions that the government should drop the allocation of the GHc241,933,000 for the E-levy services to an alleged company.

The ministry refuted reports that they had hired a private entity to collect the fee on its behalf.

“All the processes for the collection of the proposed Electronic Levy (E-levy) on Mobile Money transactions, inward remittances, and ATM withdrawals will be done by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA),” the Finance Ministry revealed.

A statement from the ministry revealed that the “Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) will manage all discussions to ensure full deployment of their current platforms and resources for the collection of the E-Levy.”

The statement also disclosed that “the GHC 241 million is a reserve that is intended to be put aside to facilitate GRA’s collection of these resources.”

Many Ghanaians have called on the government to reconsider such a tax. They argue the levy is punitive.

The Minority Caucus in Parliament had indicated its strong resolve to reject the e-levy in its entirety.

It said it will kick against the levy in any shape or form since it will inflict more hardship on Ghanaians.
