Covid-19: Government imposes new and stricter rules on international travels

Government of Ghana through the Ministry of  Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has imposed a ban on entry of visitors from Malta, South Korea, and Israel, effective Monday, December 20, 2021.

According to the Ministry in separate press statements on Friday, December 17, 2021, the travel ban on Israel and South Korea will last 14 days, but the ban on Malta is indefinite.

The new directive follows the government’s drive to control the importation of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 into the country.

Though the Ministry didn’t specify that Omicron variant was the reason for the ban on South Korea and Israel, it stated that clearly for Malta.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana wishes to inform the public that the government of Ghana has initiated a travel ban on all travelers to and from Malta with effect from Monday, 20th December 2021, due to the Omicron virus.”

The press statement  stated that all travels to and fro Israel is restricted “except in exceptional humanitarian cases or during official visits,” adding that “Permission would have to be obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in exceptional cases.”

On South Korea, the statement stressed on “a temporary travel restriction on all travelers arriving from South Korea, from Monday, 20th December 2021 for a period of 14 days.”

The Ministry called on Ghanaians to take note of the directive and adhere to it accordingly.
