Akufo-Addo Objects to the Legalization of LGBTQ+ in Ghana

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has objected to same-sex marriage in Ghana.

HE said on no basis will LGBTQ+ be legalized in the country under his regime.

He made this statement in an address at the installation of the second Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Ghana at Asante Mampong in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, February 27, 2021.

The opening of the LGBTQ center some weeks ago heightened public backlash and sparked public debate about the rights of persons in Ghana.

Many religious bodies, Parliamentarians, government appointees, and other social stakeholders were in opposition to the activities of LGBTQ activists.

The activists in turn have decried their persecution as they advocate to be accepted by society.

President Akufo-Addo’s statement follows recent public calls for the government to re-state Ghana’s position on same-sex marriage and the activities of persons who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Transgender, and Queer Intersex (LGBTQI) in Ghana.

However, the President has made his stance on the issue, saying he will never approve of it.
