KNUST Marks World Statistics Day

As the world marks the Global celebration of the World Statistical Day, the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has organized a Symposium funded by the International Statistical Institute.

The program under the theme: “connecting the world to data we can trust” was to connect experts in the field of statistics to share ideas on how they can connect the world with trusted data.

Speaking in an interview with Focus News’ Sandra Ofori-Atta, the main organizer of the event, Prof. Atinuke Adebanji underscored the need to ensure to work with trusted data.

“What we want to do today is to deliberate together and speak about what the challenges we are dealing with when we are having data we cannot trust. We are going to share ideas and rub minds and make presentations on best practices on how to achieve this”, she said.

Some key personalities who graced the event were the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Ellis Dabo, the President of the Ghana Statistical Association Prof. N.N.N. Nsowah-Nuamah, the Dean for Ghana’s Population and Housing Census, Mr. Abeka Ansah among others.

On his part, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Ellis Dabo in an interview with Focus news said he believed that data is as good as the process used in generating it.

He commended the female professors who are leading in this crusade and expressed the Vice-Chancellors’ interest in this endeavor of data science.

The President of the Ghana Statistical Association Prof. N.N.N. Nsowah-Nuamah also expressed the need for every nation to have statistics to help in its development. He thereby encouraged students to venture into Statistics because statistical knowledge is proficient in the analysis of anything.

“Every nation requires statistics to develop. The future of Data science is bright. The statistical knowledge once you have it you can analyze anything”, he said.

The event was organized in collaboration with the International Year of Women in Data Science and Statistics.
