COP26: 100 World leaders pledge to end deforestation by 2030

More than 100 world leaders, on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, promised to end and reverse deforestation by 2030 at the COP26 climate summit.

The United Kingdom is hosting the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). The conference is scheduled to happen in Glasgow from October 31 to November 12, 2021.

The summit will bring parties together to accelerate actions towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

COP26 summit is on the goal to secure global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach, adapt to protect communities and natural habitats, mobilise finance, and working together to rise to the challenge of climate change.

UK Prime Minister  Boris Johnson, who is hosting the global meeting in Glasgow, said “more leaders than ever before”, a total of 110 had made the landmark commitment.

“We have to stop the devastating loss of our forests,” he said – and “end the role of humanity as nature’s conqueror, and instead become nature’s custodian”

The two-week summit in Glasgow is seen as crucial if climate change is to be brought under control.

The countries who signed the pledge include Canada, Brazil, Russia, China, Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, the United State, the United Kingdom and many others.

Some of the funding will go to developing countries to restore damaged land, tackle wildfires and support indigenous communities.
