Intensify teaching and learning of I .C. T

A computer scientist and network engineer Mr. Joseph Atta-Yeboah has advised that teaching and learning of Information Technology in Ghanaian schools be heightened.

Speaking in a focus newsroom interview with Maame Adwoa Brembah, Mr. Atta-Yeboah underscored that the teaching of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) especially in basic schools is of great value and helps in the digital skill acquisition of students in their formative years.

He stated however that it is injudicious for the same things to be taught from basic school through to the tertiary level. He explained that ICT education does not evolve much from the basic level to the tertiary level. In his opinion, the same theories are expanded as one climbs up the Ghanaian education ladder. He reiterated that ICT education should be driven towards the purpose of discovering potential technologists.

“At the basic level, they have been taught about hardware components, at the pre-secondary level or post-secondary level, soft programming skills can be introduced,” he said.

He outlined the various subfields of technology that have been poorly explored. Among them were: software development and network security. He advised that the basics of these subfields be included in the ICT syllabus for students.

“I think ICT is too general to appreciate. There are fields like software engineering and network security where we are still lagging.” he said.
