GUSA Maintains Its Dates for 2020-2021 University Games

Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) on Thursday, May 28, 2020 agreed at its maiden executive committee meeting to stick to its plans for Inter-University games for the 2020-2021 sports calendar amidst growing concerns of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The leadership of the association, led by President Ibrahim Tanko held a three day meeting at the Gardner’s Conference Center at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), to analyze the current global crisis and arrive at a definite conclusion with regards to University Sports.

Despite almost all sporting activities currently on hold due to the restrictions resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, the association reckons, its competitions will be staged later this year and early next year hence, it is presumed, these restrictions that hinder the realization of the games will be eased before these games are held.

GUSA will hold the 2020 Cross-Country marathon race in November 2020 at the University of Health and Allied Science (UHAS) in Ho and follow it up with the Mini GUSA Games to be staged at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in January next year.

However, the association expressed its commitment in ensuring that, all the safety protocols are adhered to when the restriction on sporting competition is eased in order for the well-being of the athletes to be assured. The leadership in the coming days will also engage all the members at general assembly to furnish them with the outcome of the meeting.

A final decision is expected to be confirmed when stakeholders approve.

“The meeting was the maiden edition for the newly elected executive committee members of the association.

“We deliberated on several issues but GUSA has maintained its date for the Cross Country which will be hosted by UHAS and the Mini GUSA Games at UDS, Tamale.

“The General Assembly is yet to accept these proposals, we will send it to the GA for acceptance so we are believing that.

“If things go on well and the President finally lifts the ban on public gatherings when the condition is safe to do so, then our competitions will come on as scheduled”.

Asante Fokuo, who is the Public Relations Officer for the association told Stephen-Zando of  Kumasi based YFM.
