President Akufo-Addo accepts TOR MD, Asante Berko’s resignation from office

President Akuffo-Addo has on Wednesday, 15th April 2020 accepted the resignation from office of Mr. Asante Berko as Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).

This was after Mr. Asante Berko submitted his resignation letter of resignation to the president on Wednesday 15th April 2020. Reasons for his resignation are not yet known.

This comes a few days after he was charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States of America for arranging at least $2.5 million in bribes to be paid to Ghana government officials to gain approval for a power plant project.

The bribes were allegedly arranged by Mr. Berko when he was an executive director with the US bank, Goldman Sachs. He was appointed Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery in January 2020, replacing Isaac Osei, who resigned.

A letter signed by the Director of Communication at the Office of the President, Eugene Arhin indicated that the president received Mr. Asante Berko’s resignation and duly notified the board of Directors of TOR of the development.

The president wished him well in his future endeavors,”  the letter stated.

The SEC’s complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, charges Berko with violating the anti-bribery provisions of the FCPA and federal securities laws.

The SEC is seeking monetary penalties against Berko among other remedies.
The SEC’s case is being handled by Asita Obeyesekere and Paul G. Block of the FCPA Unit and Kathleen Shields, Mark Albers, and Marty Healey of the Boston Regional Office.
