Residents of all traditional halls on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technolgy (KNUST) have up to 5:00 PM today, Saturday 21st March 2020 to vacate the facilities.
This is according to an order from the university’s management to all students in line with the government of Ghana’s directive to close down all public universities in Ghana effective March 16 until the next four weeks due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.
Per the university’s directive, Students are to leave campus from Monday, 16 to Saturday, March 21, 2020, by 5:00 PM.
“It is mandatory for them to leave campus as indicated. Residential halls would be under lockdown after the said period has expired,” as contained in a statement signed by the university’s registrar.
International students are however allowed to stay on campus until further notice.
Focus News’ checks at all six traditional halls on campus confirm that most students have so far left the residential facilities as at 3:30 PM.
A few students who reside in private hostels in communities around KNUST were found in their hostels. Cross-section of the off-campus residents told Focus News that they would leave for their various homes in the coming days, adding that they were not under compulsion to leave their hostels.
It is not clear when exactly the students are expected to return to continue with their academic works, management of the university has however urged all students to observe all necessary precautionary measures in order to stay safe within the period.
KNUST SRC president calls on students to stay safe and sane as school closes down
President of the Student Representative Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Master Adu-Baah Charles has asked all students of the university to remain at home as much as they can to avoid possible contact with individuals with the novel coronavirus.
He has called on students to practice all necessary health precaution measures in order to avoid a possible contraction of the COVID-19.
Speaking in an interview with Tek TV, Adu-Baah stated noted that “staying indoors will decrease the chances of getting infected”.
