BREAKING: KNUST suspends all activities over coronavirus outbreak

The action is among several others taken by the University to prevent members of its community from contracting the deadly novel coronavirus.

Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has taken steps to suspend all activities involving mass human gathering, international travel of staff, all incoming and outgoing exchange programs among others on campus.

The decision, according to the management is in line with the World Health Organization’s declaration of the Novel Coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) as a pandemic, and the confirmation of two cases in Ghana by the Ministry of Health.

Staff and students returning from abroad are mandated to report first at the university hospital for screening before resuming official work.

The university management in a communique signed by the registrar also directed that all gatherings including funerals, Sporting Activities, Awards Night, Hall Weeks and other outdoor events.

All provosts, Deans, HoDs, Unite Heads and Hall Master have been directed to provide veronica buckets in front of their facilities for regular handwashing as well as providing hand sanitizers at all vantage points for use by staff, students and visitors.

We also advise members of the university community to remain calm and observe all safety measures published by the University Hospital, the Ghana Health Services and the Ministry of Health to help contain the spread of the infection,” The communique stated,

Since the outbreak of the virus, which has since been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, the number of reported cases of the virus is rising steadily in Africa as 11 countries, including Ghana’s immediate neighbors, Burkina Faso, Togo, and Ivory Coast, have all recorded cases.

Over 100 cases have thus far been recorded in Africa, with one death in Egypt.

Meanwhile, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has directed the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to make available the cedi equivalent of $100 million to enhance Ghana’s Coronavirus preparedness and response plan.

This amount, according to President Akufo-Addo, “is to fund the expansion of infrastructure, purchase of materials and equipment, and public education.”
