Coronavirus in Ghana: KNUST provides education and emergency contacts to the public

Management of West Africa's premiere Science and Technology University, KNUST are consciously providing education on how to avoid contracting coronovirus

As Ghana records its first two cases of the Covid-19 virus, Health officials at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology are intensifying measures to provide guidelines and information on what to do in order to prevent individuals from contracting the virus.

To this point, the KNUST Hospital has provided a 24-hour emergency service contact number to members of the university community and the general public.

The management in a communique explained the mode of transmission and preventive measures to the public.

How Coronavirus is transmitted

  1. Coming into direct contact with droplets sprayed through coughing or sneezing by infected people.
  2. Coming into contact with surfaces, objects, and equipment contaminated by infectious materials from an infected person. Symptoms and Signs: Infection may start with a sore throat, running nose, fever, and cough. This may later progress to difficulty in breathing and shortness of breath.

Preventive Measures

  1. Avoiding close contact (at least 1 meter) with people suffering from acute respiratory infections.
  2. Good respiratory hygiene/cough etiquette i.e. sneezing/coughing into the linen-covered elbow.
  3. Frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizers, especially after direct contact with ill people or their environment. In case of symptoms suggestive of respiratory illness either during or after travel, travelers are to seek immediate medical attention and share their travel history with their healthcare provider.
